How it works

Water softeners are sized by grains, not by house size: hardness (grains per gallon) × water use. A family of 4 at 12 gpg needs ~25,000 grains/day — a 32,000-grain unit regenerating weekly. Undersize it and it regenerates every other day, burning salt and water.

Salt-based ion exchange ($900–1,800 installed) is the only technology that truly removes hardness. Salt-free conditioners ($1,000–1,500) crystallize minerals so they do not stick — less scale, but water still tests hard and soap still underperforms.

Test first: a $20 hardness kit (or free dealer test) beats every rule of thumb. Municipal reports show averages; your street, your pipes, your number.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a water softener cost?

Salt-based: $900–1,800 installed. Salt-free: $1,000–1,500. Softener + whole-house filter combo: $2,000–3,500. DIY saves ~$600 on install.

What size softener do I need?

Multiply hardness (gpg) × 75 gallons × people × 7 days, then round up to standard grain sizes (24k, 32k, 48k). This calculator does it from your test numbers.

Salt vs salt-free — which is better?

Salt-based actually removes hardness (spots gone, soap lathers, scale stops). Salt-free reduces scale adhesion but water still tests hard. For truly hard water (>10 gpg), salt-based wins decisively.

How do I test my water hardness?

$15–25 test kits, free tests from softener dealers, or your municipal water report (averages). Test at your tap — softener dealers will do it free hoping for the sale.

What does it cost to run?

Salt-based: ~$100–200/year in salt plus ~$50 in extra water for regeneration. Salt-free: ~$50/year. Electricity: negligible.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Yes — the added sodium is minimal (a slice of bread has more). Those on strict sodium-restricted diets can add a small RO unit for drinking water.

Will it help my appliances?

Dramatically — water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines last years longer without scale. The appliance savings often pay for the softener alone.

Can I install it myself?

If you are comfortable sweating copper or PEX fittings: yes, it is a half-day job. No plumbing experience: hire it — a bad install floods the utility room.

How long do softeners last?

10–15 years for the resin tank and valve. Resin eventually fouls (iron is the killer — pre-filter if iron >0.3 ppm). Control valves are replaceable.

Do I need a whole-house filter too?

If you have chlorine taste/odor, sediment, or iron — yes, filtration and softening solve different problems. Test for the full panel before buying a combo.
